Wed like to Congratulate Ron for becoming our newest Citizen of the Month! He’s earned himself a free Beer Citizen t-shirt for his consistent long-term efforts of adding quality data when he reviews beers, adding new beers to our database, and traveling around the US taking the apps where he goes. Give him a follow, and remember, you too, could win the honor (and the awesome shirt). Just keep that data (and new beers, corrections, photos, etc.) coming in!
As many of you know, it’s that time of year again, the big show is on! We’re talking, of course, about the Great American Beer Festival. We’re not there this year, mainly because the timing just didn’t work out for us, and we’re busy at work on new features for Beer Citizen. That said, we were just in Denver and had a fantastic time drinking in the local beer culture, where GABF fever was already in the air. Here are a few pics from the adventure:
Falling Rock Tap House was an obvious stop to take in the local wares, and sample as many brews as possible that we can’t get back in our native lands. It’s also the home of the aforementioned GABF countdown. We could have spent days here, but our livers would never forgive us.
Great Divide (Beer Citizen profile here) was the first brewery stop, with an abundant selection of Yeti stout variants, some tasty pizzas, and a good selection of bottles to take on the go.
Denver Beer Co. (Beer Citizen profile here) was another must-stop location, featuring not only a great selection of tasty hop showcases, but also the perfect weather and environment to enjoy them in.
Prost Brewing (Beer Citizen profile here) was the last brewery stop on what proved to be an all-too-short trip. We were there just in time to enjoy some tasty pretzels, homemade BBQ, and help ring in their first anniversary! Ein prosit, indeed.
Denver’s an awesome city, with a rich beer history, inviting culture, and beautiful surroundings. We look forward to going back soon, hopefully for GABF next time around. If you’re lucky enough to be there now, cheers to you!
It’s nearly the middle of the month (already!?) and pretty soon, we’ll be on the hunt for a new Citizen of the Month! What a perfect time to recognize our current Citizen of the Month, Tam. Here’s his profile, give him a follow!
Tam earned the title, and his free Beer Citizen swag pack (t-shirt and stickers) not just by adding lots of great beer reviews, but by submitting lots of corrections to beer and brewery listings. These updates help us keep a current, clean, and accurate database for you to enjoy. Want to submit a correction? From a beer or brewery profile page, just click the “suggest a correction” link on the website, or click the plus button in the top right of the mobile site or iOS/Android apps.
Keep those reviews/corrections/photos and all the rest coming in… the next Citizen of the Month could be you!
We’ve updated the Beer Citizen iOS and Android apps to version 1.4.
There are several improvements available in this new version, including the following:
- Suggest corrections for beers and breweries. When viewing a profile for a beer or brewery, simply tap the plus icon in the top right of your screen, and you’ll see the option to send us a note about any corrections needed. There are also now links to do the same on the web site.
- Display of beer rating in list views. Now you can see the overall rating of any beer (with a minimum of three reviews) when searching or browsing beers. Individual citizen ratings are also available at-a-glance, denoted by a user icon.
- Display multiple tasting notes per user. Each time you review a beer, you get a new chance to add tasting notes. Now when you look at someone’s review of a beer (or your own), you can see all their tasting notes.
- Homebrew info added to beer and brewery profiles. We wanted to make it easier to identify homebrews in the apps, so now you can just look for the H icon. Incidentally, if you’re a homebrewer, adding your brews to Beer Citizen is a great way to get some detailed feedback data from your friends!
- Plus a whole host of other bug fixes and enhancements.
So go update those apps, and review a beer! As always, you can also use Beer Citizen on the web, follow us on Facebook or Twitter, or leave us some feedback. More great stuff on the way soon!
Every Month, we here at Beer Citizen bestow a great honor on one unsuspecting user (nay, Citizen). While we always announce the winner on our Twitter and Facebook feeds, we figure it’s about time we took a moment to explain what we’re doing and what we’re after with the Citizen of the Month program.
As you may know, Beer Citizen’s core purpose is to gather data via your reviews (thanks!) about what all the beers of the world are really like. We then tap into that data to help you find beers you’ll enjoy, and help you remember what you did enjoy (and why). We’ve found that there are a handful of people out there that stand out from the field, and do a lot of work to help Beer Citizen grow. Of those people, we select one each month, and add them to the ranks of Citizens of the Month.
So, what do you get for being Citizen of the Month? A sweet Beer Citizen t-shirt! Probably some stickers and coasters, too, for that matter. You also get a link to your profile on the CotM page, and recognition of your CotM status on your profile page. For that month, and henceforward, you’re officially an ambassador of Beer Citizen, and in the near future, we hope to have even more perks to throw your way as thanks for your efforts.
So how does one earn the crown? Well, it’s a juried process of hand-selecting people based on a variety of merits, but here are a few things that certainly couldn’t hurt:
- Add a profile photo
- Review lots of beers, of course
- Add lots of (relevant) data to those reviews
- Slide those sliders!
- Post lots of photos
- Spread the word on your social networks
- Add beers and breweries that aren’t yet in the database yet
If you do enough of the above, we’re sure to take notice. Keep it up, and you just may be recognized for your efforts. You’re also helping people find and enjoy better beer, which is a noble effort, indeed. Stay tuned for the next Citizen of the Month announcement, it just might be you!
Last year, Beer Citizen was lucky enough to sponsor a really amazing fundraising event at GoodLife Brewing Company, benefiting World Bicycle Relief. This year, we’re doing it again! If you’re in or around Bend, Oregon on Sunday, July 21, swing by for the truly delicious craft beers and bid on some great silent auction items, including select Beer Citizen swag!
And if you’re into cycling, the athletes of Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies will be there for the fun following the last stage of the Cascade Classic.
Where: GoodLife Brewing Company - 70 SW Century Dr | Bend, OR 97702
When: Sunday, July 21, 6:30-9:30p
Why: Raise funds to benefit World Bicycle Relief… And drink some great craft beer!!!
If one doesn’t pack the tasty brews, can one really be camping? Of course, it’s just a whole lot better with beer. With that settled, the question is this: bottles or cans? For the time being, bottles still offer far greater selection but cans are far more convenient. When you venture into the wild for a night under the stars, how do you choose which beers to bring?
OK, many of us are guilty of some (many?) of these quips. You have to admit it though - whether you’re a new craft beer aficionado or a seasoned veteran, it is pretty fun to get together with like-minded folks and “talk beer,” isn’t it? Just remember, no one is wrong about what they like - keep it friendly, keep it fun. Drink respectably.
