We’re excited to announce a new (beta) feature for Beer Citizen: the ability to find similar beers!

Starting today, when you visit the profile of a beer, take a look at the ‘similar’ tab. If the beer has a sufficient amount of review data, you’ll see a list of the beers with the most similar characteristics, based on reviews by citizens like you!

Your beer reviews have been providing us with a growing amount of data on what beers look, smell, taste, and feel like. We’re incredibly excited and thankful to have enough data from reviews like yours to start rolling out new features like this, but the more data from reviews we have, the better these features will work.

Now, more than ever, better review data helps you find better beer.

We’ll be continually dialing things in as more data becomes available, and adding more features along these lines in future updates. In the meantime, we hope you have fun, and will continue to drink, review, share - and discover - great beers with Beer Citizen.

Top rated beers, and new ways to browse!

Citizens have been asking for this feature, and now it’s here. You can now check out the list of the top 20 rated beers on Beer Citizen. Ratings are calculated using the average (mean) of each citizen’s most recent overall rating value. Each beer must have at least three unique ratings to be eligible. Don’t see your favorite in the list? Don’t agree with one you do see? Well, make sure to review the beer, as every vote counts.

To take further advantage of this new feature, we’ve revised the browse beers page on the site and the mobile apps to include a quick view of the top beers. On the site, this includes a new interface to more easily browse and discover great beers. As always, you can still access the full list of all the beers.

Beer Citizen app for Android!

It’s here and it’s free! We’re excited to announce that the Beer Citizen app for Android phones and tablets is now available, for free, on Google Play. Now Android users can take Beer Citizen with them to the pub to review, research, and share beers on the go. You can also add beer, brewery and profile photos to share with other Citizens. The app is compatible with all Android devices running version 2.2 or higher, including a wide variety of phones and tablets. As always, if you don’t have an Android or iOS device, you can still use the desktop and mobile web versions of Beer Citizen.

Beer Citizen for iOS is now available!

It’s finally here! Starting today, you can download the Beer Citizen app for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Did we mention it’s free?Download it today!

The app shares a similar user interface with our recently announced mobile web version. You can read more about how the interface works in that announcement. The best new feature the app brings is that you can now upload photos!

Don’t have an iOS device? The Android app is coming soon, and in the meantime you can access beercitizen.com with your mobile device’s browser to use the mobile web app. As always, we look forward to hearing your questions and feedback!

New Rating System

It’s been a fascinating experience listening to user feedback on our beta release. One aspect we’ve heard about frequently is the rating system, or “overall opinion.” Initially, our goal was to keep it simple and present three basic rating options (like, dislike & indifferent), but many users have voiced an interest in greater granularity; so, we’ve changed the system. We’ve replaced the previous system with a dedicated rating slider to give users more control in expressing their opinion of a beer.

A few notes about this change:

• The values from the previous like/dislike/indifferent system will not be carried over. We decided that assigning an arbitrary value to the existing ratings would be inaccurate.
• The new rating value is now mandatory when entering a review. The rating value is another metric for comparing beers, so we feel it’s important that everyone enters it.
• The new rating value is now displayed in the beer’s profile. The method we use to calculate and display the overall rating of a beer will evolve as the dataset does, but we’re keeping it simple initially, requiring a minimum of three user ratings to calculate an average score.

We hope that those of you who have entered reviews will update them with a rating value. We’re sorry to see the like/dislike opinions go, but such is the nature of being in beta, and we’re happy we’re making this change early.

World Bicycle Relief Fundraiser a Big Success!

Beer Citizen was a proud co-sponsor of a World Bicycle Relief fundraising event on July 22, at GoodLife Brewing Company in Bend, Oregon. The event was part of Optum Pro Cycling’s dedicated effort to raise funds to support World Bicycle Relief in providing access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles. 

GoodLife Brewing provided a beautiful venue and some of the best beer in the Pacific Northwest. The silent auction featuring lots of sweet cycling gear and apparel donated by Optum Pro Cycling’s sponsors raised over $3500 for WBR and we couldn’t be happier to have been a part of it.

How Beer Citizen Uses Data

It’s a question we’re asked often, and one we started with ourselves: what makes Beer Citizen different from other beer review apps? The short answer, as you may have surmised, is data. We created Beer Citizen as a new way to review beer by entering experiential data, and a new way to discover beers by leveraging that data.

Other review sites (even outside of the beer world) typically rely on written reviews or simple 5-star ratings. Written reviews are inherently subjective. By the time a beer has dozens, perhaps hundreds or even thousands of reviews, how many do you have to read to get an understanding of what the beer is actually like? Other sites tend to use an overall rating as the main point of interest. While it tells you how much a community likes a beer, it doesn’t show you - at a glance - what you’ll experience in a beer.

Beer Citizen solves this problem by focusing on the data of the experience. By simply identifying perceived traits of a beer, and then quantifying the intensity of each, a review becomes much more useful, and more suited to explaining what a beer is like. As more people enter data for a given beer, each review factors into a beer’s overall profile. In one glance, you can see what the community as a whole thinks a beer looks, smells, tastes, and feels like. You can, of course, still enter written tasting notes (and more) with your review, but it’s the data that we believe will make Beer Citizen your go-to beer reference.

Beer Citizen is currently in beta while we collect data (from people like you) and refine the system. As we get closer to a critical mass of review data, we’ll be introducing a ton of fun and useful tools. Ideas on the horizon include:

• Discovering similar beers, based on trait data
• Comparing a beer to a style as a whole
• Comparing one style of beer to another
• Searching for beers based on desired traits

These are just a few things we have on the roadmap, but we can’t do it without data. So grab a beer, enter a review, and help beer enthusiasts everywhere find a better beer. Let’s drink!
